This Character Collabs project is the perfect addition to your novel study of The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.

In this activity, students analyze key characters from the novel—Liesel, Death, Hans Hubermann, Ilsa Hermann, Max Vandenburg, and Rudy Steiner—using multiple methods of characterization. Students examine traits, motivations, relationships, and development to demonstrate a deeper understanding of the text.

Their final work is presented on a collaborative poster, making literary analysis both creative and memorable. This hands-on project boosts comprehension and retention while helping students build collaboration, critical thinking, and communication skills.

This resource includes a teacher guide, student directions, rubric, brainstorm character analysis worksheet, blank coloring pages for each character, answer keys, and digitally colored examples for every character. Editable versions of the directions, rubric, and brainstorm worksheet are also included for easy customization.

To complete each poster, students work in groups to analyze their assigned character, transfer their findings to the poster sections, collaborate to color the pieces, and tape the final product together. Each poster is made up of six pieces of paper, which can be printed on regular copy paper or card stock. Once assembled, each finished poster measures 28" x 15".
