Have your students compare and contrast two of Edgar Allan Poe’s most famous poems, “The Raven” and “Annabel Lee,” with this engaging poetry analysis lesson.

This resource combines critical thinking, paired discussion, and creative writing to help students deeply analyze two classic poems while staying actively engaged throughout the lesson.

Students begin by comparing and contrasting the poems through structured, standards-aligned questions that focus on theme, tone, structure, mood, symbolism, and other important literary elements.

After discussing their ideas with a partner and reviewing responses as a class, students transition into a creative writing extension activity that challenges them to reinterpret one of the poems through a new lens.

This resource is designed to be used after students have already read and analyzed both “Annabel Lee” and “The Raven.”
