Annotating Poetry with TP-CASTT | ELA Poetry Lesson | Guided Notes & Practice | Middle School and High School
Teach your students how to confidently analyze poetry using the TP-CASTT method with this engaging, structured, and easy-to-follow lesson.
This resource walks students step-by-step through the TP-CASTT process (Title, Paraphrase, Connotation, Attitude, Shifts, Title, Theme) and gives them the opportunity to apply their understanding through both whole-class modeling and collaborative practice.
Students will first work through a guided annotation of the poem “Flash Cards” by Rita Dove as a class using the included PowerPoint presentation. Then, they will apply their skills independently and/or in pairs with “Oranges” by Gary Soto, reinforcing their understanding of poetry analysis in a meaningful way.
