Have your students create a collaborative poster and learn about Zora Neale Hurston in a new and engaging way! This creative project encourages students to explore the life, works, and legacy of one of the most influential voices of the Harlem Renaissance through a hands-on, collaborative activity. Students will research Zora Neale Hurston’s life, major works, and cultural impact while strengthening essential teamwork and communication skills.
This engaging project pairs beautifully with a novel study of Their Eyes Were Watching God. Working in groups, students will research Zora Neale Hurston, record their findings in the designated sections of the poster, and color each piece to bring their project to life. Once the six pages are taped together, the completed display forms a cohesive and visually striking poster. The final product measures 28" x 15", can be printed on regular copy paper or cardstock, and will last for years if laminated.
This resource includes student directions, a project rubric, a graphic organizer, six blank coloring pages that combine into one complete poster, a Zora Neale Hurston answer key, and an example of the final project showing both text and color.
This collaborative author study is a meaningful addition to any American literature or Harlem Renaissance unit, allowing students to connect deeply with Hurston’s themes of identity, resilience, and voice.
